Plant with many healing powers there Common soapstone it does not get sick often and can be easily cultivated as long as you are careful of root rot. Let's find out its characteristics and preferences.

Saponaria Officinalis: characteristics

Before getting to know the plant, let's observe and take note of its properties to understand if it can be useful in some way. It is very rich in active ingredients, which makes it a multitasking plant in herbal medicine. Contains saponins, resins, mucilages, flavonoids, vitessin, gum and vitamin E and ga of important properties such as those diuretic, diaphoretic, purifying and cholagogue.

In addition to being an excellent grandmother's or natural remedy for various physical ailments, common soap becomes a plant from which various products can be obtained such as detergents for personal hygiene and those used in restoration or even for the washing of fabrics. When using the extracts of this plant or products containing it internally, it is important to be very careful because if you do not follow the instructions it can cause serious damage to health.

The common Saponaria perennial plant

Including the wide use that can be made of this plant, let's get to know its botanical characteristics. It is a perennial plant that has very saponin-rich roots, which explains its name. To find its origins we don't have to go far, they are in Europe, from which it also spread in Siberia and America. It grows wild but we can also cultivate it and is usually used to form bushes that cover dry stone walls or fill bare areas of the garden.

It is a tangle of long and very branched stems that form a dense network. They are covered with green and oval or lanceolate leaves, and in spring also with growing flowers in clusters.Despite the beautiful appearance of the bushes, to keep our soapwort in good health it is important to prune it by eliminating branches and dried flowers, favoring the growth of new ones that otherwise risk suffocating.

The plant of the Common Saponaria is quite adaptable and resistant but it has its own preferences, it prefers to stay in semi-shade or in the sun, except in the hot season, and bravely faces the cold as long as persistent frosts do not occur.

In the first phase of growth it is better to protect specimens of this bush recently planted, watering them regularly to ensure that the root system develops. As the plant grows there is less and less need to take care of it and the rain will water it directly without us bothering.
As for the choice of soil, we try to choose those that are well drained and very loose because root rot can kill this type of plant. In general, Saponaria is also suitable for arid soils and in spring it likes the use of a fertilizer in granules suitable for flowering plants to be scattered at its feet.

To multiply the Saponaria you can choose between different methods, using the seed or cutting from the tufts of the previous year. As the method changes, the period in which to operate also changes, for the propagation by seed the spring season is expected, for the diffusion by cutting instead the summer season. In this case, a semi-woody branch of the mother plant is cut and placed in a pot, watering it while waiting for the root system to form. When the roots sprout it means that it is autonomous and we can plant it in the open ground.

Flowering of the Saponaria

As we have already mentioned when describing the plant, its flowers are collected in clusters and have a very evident bright pink color. The tiny flowers that form the inflorescences give life to the fruits in the form of fringed capsules and are a symbol of happiness.

Vegetable keratin cleansing cream with Saponaria

An example of a cosmetic product obtained from Saponaria is this vegetable keratin cleansing cream with soap, especially recommended for those with very damaged, dry or easily broken hair. It is a cream that without sulfates and without foaming surfactants nourishes and repairs hair and over time that makes them soft and silky, incredibly light. It should be applied to wet hair, gently massaging the scalp and hair and then emulsify with a little water and leave on for 2 to 3 minutes. Then you need to rinse thoroughly. If you want to try this portentous cream you can read its technical characteristics and buy it directly on Amazon.

Saponaria Ocymoides

Among the various species of soapwort there is that of rock also called Saponaria ocymoides. Always of European origin, this plant forms real crawling cushions of small dimensions that do not grow in height but above all in width but rather slowly.

It is mainly used in gardens also because it is one of the few that it blooms with tenacity from spring until the first colds appear. Its bright pink clusters are sometimes the only splash of color to resist. In nature it grows spontaneously even in the mountains.

We find it used in herbal medicine to take advantage of the many vegetable saponins which contain its roots. For this reason it has always been cultivated in abundance and then used for washing laundry and in particular wool. Saponin is in fact a substance that creates foam in contact with water and is very effective in detaching fats from tissues. From the leaves of the saponaria ocymoides we can instead extract antirheumatics or produce decoctions useful for gargling.
