Rising humidity solutions: here are the main ones

L'rising humidity, or rising damp, it is not only a solution of annoyance and discomfort from an aesthetic and healthy point of view. It is also a condition that can be very expensive to repair, and that must be addressed as soon as possible in order to prevent its characteristics from deteriorating more persistently in its premises.

But which are the best rising moisture treatment options? What are the solutions for rising humidity which you might choose to experiment with before calling a professional?

What is rising humidity

Let's go in order, and remember how rising humidity or rising damp it is one of the most delicate types of moisture to correct.

You will probably need the help of a professional who can examine the origins of this injurious condition and help you with finding the best healthiness of the environments. Consequently, since rising damp is less easy to manage, its resolution can be more expensive than other types of humidity.

Of course, it is not possible to speculate what the cost of a rising damp treatment, and to find out, you can only contact a professional in the sector, who will make a timely quote based on your actual condition.

That said, fortunately there are some things you could do to try to improve the health of the environment, and prevent conditions from worsening. Let's find out together

It seemed protective

The first thing you should do is try to figure out if there is or not (if it isn't, it might be useful to install it) a membrane moisture-proof, which should prevent water from penetrating the floor or walls at ground level.

Not all houses are equipped with this kind of element and, especially for older houses, it happens that there is no protection from rising damp.

Therefore, if this is your case, we recommend that you locate one waterproof path applying a thin strip near the bottom of the exterior wall.

Of course, we are fully aware that it is not always easy to try to understand if there is a waterproofing of the environments. Therefore, you will probably have to ask an expert to confirm whether there is a waterproof membrane in your apartment or not.

If not, it is better to intervene in this sense, and therefore ensure better waterproofing. If it is there, but it turns out that it is still damp, then the waterproofing may have been damaged or worn over time.

Obviously, if there is only one small spot of moisture on the floor, then you may be able to remedy it by repairing the membrane to prevent water from passing through it. It may be sufficient to apply two coats of bituminous latex in waterproof emulsion under the floor (you can buy it in many DIY stores). For added protection, some experts recommend laying special reflective film paper (with the top side) even before the paint is dry. However, this is only suitable for minor cases of rising damp.

If, on the other hand, the humidity is high, then it may be necessary to completely replace the moisture-proof membrane. This is a treatment that can be expensive, but it may also be necessary if the humidity is widespread or if other solutions have not worked.

Repair or insert a waterproof field

That said, the most common remedy in case of a missing or damaged waterproof field is for a moisture specialist to drill holes in the wall and inject waterproof foam that can act as a new protective screen.

In any case, it is also true that there are alternative solutions, confirming the difficulty in making excessive syntheses in this theme. Think about cutting the grooves in the masonry and installing a piece of waterproof covering rather than a chemical one: this is a more invasive element than simple drilling, and less easily hidden.

Check the external soil

If you have perfectly impermeable soil, the moisture problem could be due to the fact that the outdoor soil has ended up accumulating above the moisture-impermeable path, which should be 15 cm from the level. of the soil.

The problem can be solved by digging the excess soil on the outside of the wet wall below the level of the waterproof covering. You could do it yourself, or you could have a professional do it.

Non-waterproofed walls and floors

L'waterproofing of a wall or floor is a technical term that identifies the activities necessary to seal the apartment and protect it from humidity. This procedure is usually done for areas that are already wet, and can be done by covering the surface with asphalt (a thick liquid) or a membrane.

For the walls, the intervention would be carried out under the plaster, while for the floors it would be carried out under the concrete. The areas must first be prepared, filled and then treated ... in short, it is a great job that can hardly be done in a do-it-yourself way.

We remind you in this sense that the installation can be very expensive and can be very invasive. So, as with other expensive wet jobs, it is certainly worth getting some expert advice to help decide if you really need to go down this road before committing to such an activity.

We hope these tips can be useful in improving your relationship with rising damp: talk to an experienced professional to find out more!
