House, garden, swimming pool and interiors, all “in the circle of life”: that's how it is Woodville proposes to design thehome environment, from the choice of materials to the low CO2 consumption, al energy saving. Always with an impeccably welcoming aesthetic. For Marco Saracino, who together with Cristina Ciovati founded Woodville, living better in one's own home, in harmony, is a beginning to better inhabit the whole planet.

1) When were you born and what is your mission?

Woodville was born in the summer of 2011 from the meeting of my interests, as a marketing expert, with those of Cristina Ciovati, who is an architect. We started with a simple consideration: is the traditional construction method still sustainable? There is a credible and impartial offer on the market of eco-sustainable houses? We found an answer in the bio-building in wood and for about a year and a half we have been committed to finding and selecting suppliers to produce architecture and furnishings that help reduce the environmental impact and guarantee customers healthy and comfortable environments. We have therefore created an image consistent with the mission to begin via the web to spread awareness that an alternative choice was possible and we are organizing a series of events, in collaboration with our sponsors.

2) What measures for environmental sustainability in your projects? And in the choice of materials?

Our homes are born from the design stage with the aim of impacting the environment as little as possible with an obsessive attention to the orientations, the distribution of openings and the shape of the building, improve its energy performance. We preferably use materials produced with a reduced consumption of non-renewable substances. We mainly focused on the offer of wooden houses which comes only from controlled cultivation forests. Insulations are also preferred in cultivable materials (hemp, wood fiber, bamboo). We choose non-toxic materials that do not contain volatile substances (VOC free) and therefore do not contribute to indoor pollution in homes. There are also precautions relating to wood treatments and the use of natural paints with very low solvent content, all to the benefit of allergies and the delicate immune systems of children.

3) What alternatives exist to a prefabricated wooden system, for a natural house with maximum energy efficiency?

We are very far from the concept of "prefabricated" because we accompany customers in the creation of a "unique" and functional home for their needs, which reflects their personality and, above all, integrates harmoniously with the surrounding environment.

It is often thought that the structure makes the difference, and imposing walls and complex systems are imposed to achieve high levels of energy performance, in reality almost 90% of the savings can be obtained with the correct “passive” concept of the house. This means paying the utmost attention to fully exploiting the resources and characteristics of the place including the use of plants and natural wind currents.

This reasoning precedes the choice of the structure that we have chosen to base on a load-bearing solid wood wall, made without glues but with interlocking connections, considered the best on the market. With these preconditions, integrated systems and home automation can really lead to energy self-sufficiency (zero energy) or even to be "active", that is, to produce more energy than that consumed during the year.

4) What are the construction times and costs for a customer with land already owned?

An average price of the finished products is between 1300 and 1500 euros per square meter including systems and finishes. The quality of the finishes chosen by the customer and the system choices that must be made greatly affect the cost: for example, the use of geothermal systems can greatly affect the cost. Construction times are extremely faster than traditional houses: for a villa it takes 3-4 weeks for the structural part only and about 3-4 months for the construction of the complete house, even furnished.

5) What do you mean by redevelopment of the existing building with an innovative way of building renovation that respects resources?

The wooden constructions they have always been associated with new constructions on bare ground, in reality they also adapt very well to extensions or elevations. This is because first of all they are lighter materials and with a response behavior to stresses that are more suited to masonry construction. In our experience we have not found builders of wooden houses who also deal with extensions / renovations, the wood it helps to ensure an improvement in anti-seismic safety performance, placing less pressure on the structures and behaving more flexibly. For indoor solutions, for example, we prefer to lay the parquet on sand rather than glue it and there are small modifications aimed at energy improvement, always with our guiding philosophy.

6) What characteristics do your furniture have? Why are they ecological?

The furnishings we offer are made to measure with two major advantages. On the one hand, they allow you to make the most of space using a modular system that adapts to all three dimensions of the space. On the other hand they try to reduce the consumption of wood using it only where necessary. For a built-in wardrobe, for example, it is possible to avoid internal paneling, saving 5 sides out of 6 of wood and guaranteeing aesthetics, quality, solidity equal to a normal one, but with greater space and hygiene. In the event of decommissioning for moving to another home, it is also possible to make the furniture with a home disassembly service that will allow you to give new life to the materials used for other creations or to adapt the furniture to the new home.

Nothing is thrown away and we all gain!

7) Why do you define your gardens as natural, beautiful and useful?

The garden it must be thought in a more natural way, especially with native plants in harmony with the surrounding place. The goal of our gardens is to also contribute to the reception of species of animals and insects that no longer find a suitable habitat in the gardens. There are certain plants that attract butterflies, rather than other insects, trees for the nesting of some birds, for example. In addition to being places of relaxation, in our opinion gardens must also be a tool to help nature regain its spaces by feeding biodiversity, trying to minimize maintenance by humans. Finally, there is the pool: there are natural pools without chlorine or chemicals but only with the correct mix and balance of marine plants and fish that perform the function of natural filters. Their maintenance is greatly reduced and in winter they can remain full freezing and forming enchanting frozen lakes.
