Anyone who has recently taken a tour of a large city, including Italian, will have noticed some shops with the sign Bubble Tea and, most likely, the front row of hungry or curious people. Is it a new fashion or something really interesting to try? Is it worth it and, above all, is it a healthy food or an exception to the rule that we can afford once in a while? Now let's go deeper!
Bubble tea: what it is
This drink was created in Taiwan in the eighties. Its name recalls the idea of chewing and perhaps some of us associate it with the well-known "bug bubble" and in fact it is not entirely wrong because the consistency of this substance allows us to chew it as well as to sip it. We cannot therefore speak of a pure drink but of one snacks.
Bubble tea: ingredients
In the basic version, they exist different variants, as ingredients we find black tea, milk and tapioca pearls. The result of this blend has a gelatinous consistency and a taste difficult to describe but which can in some ways resemble that of licorice. It should be noted that tapioca is gluten free as well as the other ingredients, so Bubble Tea can be safely consumed even by those with celiac disease without any problem.
More than the ingredients, however, and the flavor, we must look at its peculiarity which is certainly the consistency and the idea, so original and certainly well promoted by a captivating marketing campaign, of being able to chew a tea. Therefore, many variations were born that have maintained the consistency but have adopted new flavors and aromas.
The tea at the base of this snack in most cases remains theEarl Gray but we can also find it with matcha and with jasmine tea which gives a very delicate flavor. In summer, new flavors appear that are particularly fresh such as those of peach tea and passion fruit tea. They are a bit fashionable, yes, but in fact they are also refreshing.
There are variants that provide for substitutions of milk, one of the three original ingredients. We can find it there yogurt, or ice cream, especially in summer. For those who do not tolerate milk and dairy products, or want a light version, there is bubble tea with fruit juice.
To achieve the desired consistency, some prefer to prepare this drink / snack with powdered cream but it is not the best choice and not even the healthiest. Most people prefer to consume cold bubble tea but it depends a lot on the season and you can also choose the hot version.
Bubble tea: topping
If all this is not enough for you, do not give up the idea of tasting a bubble tea because there are also toppings to choose from to enrich it and make it even less healthy. There is a variety of colors, even in the literal sense, and for all tastes. In the options we find smarties, gummy, chocolate chips, or i popping boa which are nothing more than transparent pearls filled with syrups of various flavors. Particularly, these balls have the fact that they go to the bottom and are bitten to be able to taste the real flavor. Another very popular option includes strips of sweet and flavored jelly. For the healthiest, there is fruit, preferably tropical.
Bubble tea: calories
Taste a bubble tea once, it is an experience that can be had, and even occasionally yielding to this temptation, if you like, is certainly not serious. It must not become a habit, consume it, because it is not a healthy food nor is it a friend of the line. The real recipe containsquantity of zucchero too high and to obtain it "bubble" and colored, many dyes, preservatives and additives are used.
It varies from blend to blend and not all ingredients have similar nutritional values, but in general we can consider that on average a glass of 200 ml of this special “tea” contains between 300 and 500 calories.
Obviously, light versions have also been created for those who are attentive to the line but at the same time do not want to miss the opportunity to at least taste this exotic snack. If from the main recipe we remove the sugar and we substitute chia seeds for tapioca, we get a version with almost half the calories and similar texture.
A good middle ground, not too poor but not too heavy, is the one without sugar but with matcha which is a lot rich in vitamins, minerals, polyphenols. The blend therefore consists of this tea, the most antioxidant, almond milk and chia seeds as a topping.
Bubble tea: where to taste it
To date, if no new dedicated shops have been opened, in Italy only in Milan and Rome you can take away the whim of tasting this snack to chew. Those who are curious and live elsewhere can also prepare it at home. Tea and milk, of various types, are easy to find, the most difficult ingredient are tapioca pearls which, however, we can buy in those shops specializing in Asian foods or online.
