Marine environment and aquatic environment, more generally: it is there that all the activities of the Turin cooperative “swim” Pelagosphera. Composed of three partners (Nicola Nurra, Marco Battuello and Rocco Mussat Sartor), it deals with environmental monitoring but is also very committed to disseminating and raising awareness of issues related to'Marine environment and its protection. Nurra, the president, tells us in which waters Pelagosphera navigates.

1) When were you born and from what experiences do you come from regarding the marine environment?

The Pelagosphera Cooperative was founded in March 2010 and is currently made up of 3 members, two naturalists and a biologist who live and work in Turin while dealing with Marine environment. Each of the members has a long academic background, a PhD in biodiversity conservation and evolutionary biology and experience gained in the field of research in marine sciences, ecology, ethology and environmental monitoring, in particular in marine and marine-coastal environment.

2) What activities do you carry out in the marine environment?

Environmental monitoring is the main one. Both in Marine environment, both in the aquatic world, we provide monitoring services for the territory, ecosystems and the marine environment but also aquatic in general. The operational headquarters at the University of Turin guarantees high quality standards and allows for continuous dialogue with the academic world. We also deal with conservation of biodiversity, scientific dissemination and teaching in schools of all types and levels.

3) Which public and / or private entities do you collaborate with, regarding the marine and non-marine environment?

Mainly with universities and research centers, with Marine Protected Areas and National or Regional Parks. We are partners of private companies in the implementation of off-shore monitoring on platforms and regasification plants, we work and have worked for IREN Energia, FIAT, ERM Italia. About Marine environment, we are also actively involved in monitoring the sinking of the Costa Concordia on the Giglio Island.

4) What do you propose in the context of training on the marine environment?

Education and training remain a central theme for Pelagosphera. We have numerous teaching projects, especially related to'Marine environment, dedicated to schools of all levels. There is the EAMM project (Mediterranean Marine Environmental Education), funded by the Tuscany Region and the Piedmont Education Center and at the University of Turin we carry out courses and seminars, we assist students in their thesis or internship path at the Laboratory of Marine Biology of the University of Turin.

5) Do you carry out studies or analyzes of the environmental impact?

We offer professionalism and competence both to the public and to the private sector, we provide tools and knowledge to best carry out environmental impact assessment studies with the collaboration of professionals in the sector. The network of professionals working with the cooperative is able to cover the client's needs, both in the marine environment, both in the aquatic environment in general, and in the underwater environment.

6) What are your educational activities and who are they aimed at?

Pelagosphera pays particular attention to the aspects relating to the training of young people, considering the awareness and knowledge ofMarine environment and not, an essential element of the knowledge of each citizen. The proposals modulated according to age and schools provide for education projects on'Marine environment, workshops, seminars, visits to laboratories and museum collections, interdisciplinary excursions.

7) How much awareness is there among citizens of the conditions in which the marine environment is found and of the dangers it runs?

Complex question. Today there'Marine environment and not, and its protection is certainly not the center of attention in the country. The perception is that there is little interest from above, so it is the subjectivity and conscience of the individual citizen that determines greater or lesser awareness. The school can do a lot in this regard. In our small way, we do not miss an opportunity to confront "common people", to stimulate local administrations and to try to transmit correct and targeted messages so that everyone can contribute even with small daily gestures to protect the heritage constituted byMarine and aquatic environment highly endangered and highly threatened.
