Economic development passes through the sustainability. Even the environmental performance, however, as in other cases, they must be able to be evaluated, measured, compared… in short, a metric is needed for them to become a reference. The calculation of the carboon footprint (there is also the water footprint) is the most used of these calculation methodologies, although not the only one.
The voluntary commitments of companies for the evaluation ofenvironmental footprint, aimed in particular at calculating the carbon footprint and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, are increasingly important for strengthening the actions envisaged by the Kyoto Protocol and from Climate-Energy Package adopted by the Council of the European Union in 2008.
It is in this context that the Ministry of the Environment and Land and Sea Protection initiated a environmental footprint program of products-services to experiment on a large scale and optimize the different ones methodologies for measuring environmental performance, taking into account the characteristics of the various economic sectors, in order to be able to harmonize them and make them replicable.
The initiative is also aimed at identifying the procedures for carbon management of companies and the diffusion in the production processes of low carbon technologies and best practices. These activities represent not only an environmental driver but also a competitiveness driver for the system of Italian companies which takes into account the importance that is given today to the ecological requirements of products;
Green technologies and good practices they are also an important tool for economic and commercial development in the direction of an increasingly sustainable economy, as well as an opportunity to create a new awareness in the consumer towards more responsible choices and virtuous behavior.
The implementation of the environmental footprint program was entrusted to the 'Task Force for the assessment of the environmental footprint of production and consumption systems and models' established at the technical secretariat of Environment Minister Corrado Clini. The main task of the task force is to assist the Ministry in its activities, with particular reference to the calculation of carbon footprint and water footprint.
The environmental footprint program has received the support of many large national companies, which deserve to be mentioned: Gucci, Benetton Group, Cucinelli, Cruciani (textiles, leather goods and fashion), Motorways for Italy, Airports of Puglia, Autovie Venete, UniCredit, Telecom Italia, SAP Italia, Telespazio, GiPlanet, Autodromo di Modena, Italo NTV, Auta Marocchi (infrastructure and services), San Benedetto, Illycaffè, Carlsberg Italy, Castello Beer, Mosconi Pasta, Eataly, B&G Alimentari pasta factory (beverage and food), Archimede Solar Energy (renewable energies), L'Oreal, Pirelli & C., Palazzetti Lelio, MCZ Group, Colorificio San Marco, Leroy Merlin (industry), a series of wine industries (Principi di Porcìa, Tasca d'Almerita, Azienda Vitivinicola Planeta, Marchesi Antinori, Mastroberardino, Agricola Castello Montevibiano Vecchio, Masi Agricola, F.lli Gancia & Co., Michele Chiarlo Winery and Venica & Venica); LeFay Resort (tourism), Cà Foscari University of Venice, University of Rome Tor Vergata, University of Calabria (training), Municipalities of Leni, Malfa and Santa Marina di Salina (municipality).
